当時のザ・タイガースのファン層は10代の少女が中心だったこともあり、人気は華やかな沢田と瞳に集中する反面、大人びた雰囲気であった岸部には男性ファンが多く付き、アーティスト志向のミュージシャンの間での評価も当時から高かった。また、リーダーとして沢田をはじめメンバーから厚く慕われていた。例えば、ベトナム戦争が激化していた当時に行われた雑誌インタビューに於いて「一番怖いものは何?」との問いに他のメンバーが「戦争」「武器」などと答えている中、岸部ひとりが「人の心」と答えるなど、当時から後の「俳優・岸部一徳」としてのキャラクターに通ずる落ち着いた大人の風格を漂わせていた。
